YES, thank you for your insightful comments! Single Payer does indeed make sense, if they're talking about reducing waste and beaurocracy. And the idea that it would eliminate competition and therefore degrade the quality of our healthcare is troubling in its underlying assumption that all healthcare providers are market-driven. Many are, of course, but we have to trust that doctors are trying to treat patients well not only to "compete in the market," right?
Is it possible that doctors care about the health of their patients, and would continue to work hard towards this end even if it didn't equate more money? I think it is, and I think it should be encouraged.

On a more personal note, while I haven't found healthcare I have found a job! A shitty, seedy, low paying job! But seriously, the nice thing about all the "this economy" propoganda is that it teaches you to be grateful for what you've got, when maybe you do indeed deserve better. I haven't decided yet. In the past ten years I've made money off waitressing, cooking, and...taking naked pictures of myself, so I would love to see what earn a living off of this whole thinking thoughts thing....

The great thing about grad school is that they'll pay me to learn, so if I can just hold out for another 9 months of "would you like your wings hot medium or mild" I'll be in the clear.

This is not a picture about hot wings or graduate school. Everybody knows what hot wings look like.

I'm a physician in support of health care reform, as long as it's tied to malpractice reform. I don't think anyone outside of the health care industry realizes what a farce the malpractice industry in this country is. An orthopaedic surgeon in NYC has to pay 100K a year for malpractice. Every year. Now picture every physician in the city dealing with that. If you operate on someone and they disappear (which happens quite a bit), even if you call them, even if you send them telegrams, and they turn up later with a poor outcome due to lack of follow-up... it's your fault. Etc. I was trained in the Canadian system and I'd love to work in a system like that, but that includes the Canadian malpractice system, which is very different from the US.
