Holy batshit Batman!
Work has just been craaaaazy! So many television pilots are being shot right now and most of us won't see but a handful of them. By last count, the networks had ordered something like 60 pilots to date and we'll be lucky to see even 10 percent of those. The rest? They'll sit on the shelves for ever and ever and ever...
What is most pathetic, though, is that of this huge number of shows almost HALF of them are either cop dramas (NYPD Blue, CSI) or legal dramas (Law & Order) or a combination thereof. How's that for creativity?
There are a couple interesting prospects though (at least to me), not the least of which are:
* The UNTITLED DANNY GLOVER PROJECT: This is being written and produced by Walter Mosley, a reknown writer of African-American film noir (he wrote DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS)
* The UNTITLED LAS VEGAS PROJECT: About a security surveillance team in a Las Vegas casino.
* NYPD 2069: A cryogenically frozen NYPD cop is reawakened after 63 years and rejoins the force.
And some of the more inane ideas...
* ALASKA: An Alaskan state trooper investigates crimes in the frozen tundra. How much crime can there possibly be out in the wild??? Poachers??? Ice smugglers???
* KAREN SISCO: Spin off of J-Lo's character from the film, OUT OF SIGHT. Talk about no inspiration...
* SKIN: Romeo & Juliet story against the backdrop of L.A.'s porn industry. The daughter of a porn mogul falls in love with the son of the district attorney, brought to you by Jerry Bruckheimer.
* JAG spinoff, GILMORE GIRLS spinoff, and YOUNG MACGUYVER. SHEEEEESH!
Folks, very little about this industry is actually creative. But at the very least it does provide work for a lot of people, crap or otherwise.
Word of the day: verisimilitude (n) - 1. The appearance of truth; the quality of seeming to be true. 2. Something that has the appearance of being true or real.
