Miscellaneous
Just got back from the Hepcat reunion show at the Great American Music Hall in SF (Review Here). Amazing show as always. They are just such a quality band. And the crowd was amazing too, which is always surprising. I miss those kinds of shows where everyone is into it, and dancing, and having a good time. Most indie rock shows that I go to now are just musicians getting up on stage and wanking it. singing about their feelings for 45 minutes and the crowd stares up on stage with folded arms. But Hepcat are from that ska revival period in the 90's, with a healthy dose of old school Jamaican soul and jazz, so its almost a requirement to get down. I'm not a big ska fan by any means, but these guys just do it for me.
Bumped into my old pal/ex-coworker Victor at the show. Always good seeing him, he's such a genuine awesome guy. Went to some party that they knew about afterward. Made the rounds. It's hard for me to go to parties nowadays where I don't know most of the people there. I'm a social dunce, so it's really tough to start meeting new people.
Vic lives in the Castro and told me a story of how something called "straight bashing" is starting to become a bit of a trend there, where groups of gay men turn the tables on straight people in the Castro. If it's true I think it's the dumbest thing I've heard in a while. To me, the Castro has not necessarily been a place about being gay, but about being open and accepting of different lifestyles (which is the reason it was a safe haven for gays & lesbians in the first place). But this new practice is just as repugnant as gay bashing. Why would you beat on a straight person who comes to the Castro. If you really want to beat on a straight person, go to the anti-gay rallies and beat on those idiots that are against you, rather than the people who are there to hang out with you. I've walked down the Castro at night many a time alone, and to think someone might beat on me because I'm straight just makes me laugh. Okay, whatever. If it's not that, it's my skin color. If not that, my religion, or something else. I hate all you idiots who feel the need to go beat on people that are different than you.
Got a few comments on my new SG hoodie during the night. One drunk fraterity brother-type guy at the party came up to me and said "oh man, there are some hot chicks on there". I'd reply and say "yes, there are many attractive ladies on the site. are you a member?". "No" was the answer. Somehow I wasn't surprised...
