something i realized the other day...
it really bothers me how low peoples expectations are (in general) in regards to how they judge the character of other people. that is to say the bar seems to be really low. actions people take that should be done in the first place suddenly make someone a "good" person.
an example being something like holding the door open for someone or something like that. in other words this is the way people should be in the first place, as opposed to someone getting their proverbial dick sucked for being this way and touted as a good person. being decent doesnt make you good, it makes you decent. you wouldnt give someone employee of the year for showing up to work, would you? being a decent person is such a rarity that being decent makes you look good by comparison.
dont get me wrong, im not saying im a great guy. far from it. anyone who knows me can tell you i refer to myself as an asshole. im a bitter, crude, confrontational, cynical, lazy, misanthropic, sadistic, self-destructive sonofabitch and by all rights should have no friends and be treated as a social leper (well more so than i am normally). i smoke too much pot, i want to punch most people in the throat and i pretty much only look out for me and mine. yet, i still occasionally get told that im a "good guy." i personally dont get it.
i guess it just irritates me that while people should be celebrating human characteristics such as honesty and loyalty, they are usually more concerned with how pretty someone is or perpetuating some sick cycle of deluding themselves into believing that various predacious pricks they encounter are worth being around for longer than 5 seconds.
/end rant
