Waiting for the blizzard.. it is supposed to start anytime..
Ok actually I just can't sleep.. so here I am
Tomorrow at 8 am my buddy Kristie is supposed to go in for shoulder surgery. If the blizzard comes through then she wont. If she does I get to look after dear sweet Kayla some more..
Rented a ton of movies for when Kristie is bored after surgery.. watched Muppets Take Manhattan..
I KNOW

ANOTHER WRESTLING STORY
SPOILERS! (Click to view)
I went through a couple coaches when I was in high school. They always seemed to be getting fired for various reasons. The head coach we got my first year (my junior year) was a bit of a dick. He came up to me mid-season and said.. you know I would really rather you wrestled girls. I replied.. "well sir, so would I but unfortunetly I do not have that option."
So my Senior year I was super girl. I had been wrestling all summer trying to get better I was applying for colleges and doing the debate thing and I was alo in Air Force Jr. ROTC (SHUT IT!!! I hear the snickers) I found out that there was going to be an open tournament (no qualifications needed) at Missouri Valley College.. a school with a women's wrestling team that gives out scholarships... So I some how convinced my mom I should go; we raked together money and poof off I went.
I went 1-1 at the tournament but I came back home with a signed letter of intent and a full scholarship offer.. yippee!
So I get back to school only to find out the Coach FH (fuck head as you will recall from a previous post) had held a wrestle off while I was gone.. FOR MY SPOT!!! I was beyond pissed. I got back to pratice on a Tuesday and the tourny was Friday so there was "no time" for a wrestle off.. That meant I wasn't going to wrestle in the county tounament my Senior year. I mean COME ON. I was at a tournament trying to get a SCHOLARSHIP.. think any of the guys would have lost their spot over this? Hell and no..
So we are at practice Wednesday night and the coach is going over the roster (I am FUMING) He asks everyone if they are still planning on wrestling; making sure no one is hurt. He asks the 140 lber who says yes (of course he does.. this is the kid's 2nd season sitting behind me at JV why would he turn down a varsity spot). Then he asks the 45 pounder who says yes; and then he gts to the 152 pounder.
The kid says he isn't going.. that he would rather go to the Military Ball...
now remember.. I am a senior in ROTC and a girl to boot and I am planning on skipping the dance to watch my team compete. and this kid is saying F' it.. I dont want to wrestle. WTF
We were not "deep" at 152 and this kid was our only guy at that weight class. The coach says fine, scratches him, looks up and says.. "who wants to wrestle 52?"
Give you three gusses what I did..
My handshot up in the air so fast I think I almost dislocated my shoulder. "I'll wrestle it coach"
That guy looked at me with THE most bipolar expression I have ever seen.. a cross between loathing, respect, fear, and happiness..
"Are you sure? Thoe guys are pretty big?"
"I workout with jason (our 52 lber) and I'm fine, hell, I workout with Bruce too (our 60 pounder).. just let me wrestle"
The other guys on the team who could have maybe steppedup (any of the 40 or 45 pounders) just looked at our coach. They weren't volunteering. Most of them thought it was bogus that I had lost my spot to begin with.
Not having much choice he wrote it down and said.. all right.. but you are gonna have to get big.
You see after the new year high school kids are given a 2 pound allowance which means instead of weighing in at 140; I could be 142. Or in this case instead of 152, 154.
There is a rule that says you can only wrestle one weight class higher then you weigh in for.
If I weigh 139 that puts me in the 140 pound weight class. That means I can only compete at 140 or 45.
Well; I weighed 140 on the dot (just coming back from a tournament where I weighed in at 138). So in order to wrestle the now 154 weight class, I would have to weigh 143 at least.
I stepped on the scale 2 days later at weigh-ins with every bit of my clothing on; after having ate lunch. Our assistant coach told the weigh-in official that he ust wanted to get me in and out ASAP so the guys could weigh i (a few years ago the guys would strip down for weigh-ins.. they dont now). Truth is. had I stripped down to my singlet; I would have been screwed. So I jumped on, saw my weight and jumped off... 143.5.. with every stitch of clothing of.. socks, sweats, t-shirt and warm up jacket.
By the time night came around and the teams were waring up everyone knew that I had bumped up two weight classes. My teammates from over the summer were pissed, my friends that I had randomly made were pissed, and they told everyone they could find that "their girl" was getting hosed.
There were 6 mats set up on the gym flor so everyone was wrestling at once. They called my match and I started to get ready.
I have no idea what happened in that match. I was on auto-drive. I remember the screaming and yelling as we went out of bounds and the assistant coach was in my face telling me to keep wrestling smart.. and I remember the kid being super tall and strong. And the refs.. they kept yelling.. (from what my mom told me) seems I had developed a little cult following and as matches finished around me the other wrestlers would just stand at my match and watch.. then other refs came over, and coaches.
I don't remember the takedown I used. but I can't ever forget feeling the crowd cheer. I felt it.. it was so loud. The best part was the moms coming up to me later.. telling me how proud they were of me..not just the moms from my team.. but from any team.. so excited to see a girl compete and do well.
It's funny, I never won a tournament against the guys in high school;but I did win individual matches; several of them. But each win seems like it was marked with its own triumph off the mat as well.
