Columbus, Ohio
Born in Maumee, Ohio, Forsyth was Colonel of the 64th OVI. In 1862, he was a inspector general and eventually aide-de-camp to General Joseph Mansfield.
In 1863, Forsyth was adjutant to General Philip Sheridan. In the above picture from the left are Wesley Merrit, General Philip Sheridan, George Crook, James Forsyth and finally George Armstrong Custer. Custer was in command of the 7th US Cavalry at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, which ties into the previous post on Stanislas Ray.
After the civil war, Forsyth did hold various positions until he took over as Colonel of the 7th US Cavalry in 1886. As Colonel of the 7th Cavalry, Forsyth is known for a rather dubious event. On December 29, 1890, Forsyth was in command of the 7th Cavalry at the Wounded Knee Massacre in South Dakota.
Forsyth did marry the daughter of former Ohio governor William Dennison.
