In today's society, it is considered wrong to rely on a crutch to help you through your life. You should be able to live life without any outside aid, be a man, you don't need help. But what is the one thing that separates us from the more primitive societies of the past? The ability to create. To use tools.
And what is a crutch if not a tool used to help you get along in life when you might otherwise fall down. Now, of course those of us on these crutches are not impervious to falling. Someone or something could come along and knock the crutch loose, sending us to the wonders of rock bottom. Who is the fool, the one who takes no precaution against falling, or the one who does? It is one opinion that those of us who use these crutches, (mental, physical, or chemical) are simply examples of mankind's intellectual evolution. Adaptation to a society gone out of ones control. Darwin. The next phase. We are all raised to believe we can be anything we want to be. But once you get to that age, you realize it is far more likely that your dreams will remain fiction and you'll have to settle with a more mundane existence.
So you turn to a distraction. Something to occupy your time and block out that nagging feeling that you're stuck. You're worthless. You're a failure. You watch shows where people live out dreams. You watch shows where people are given the chance to make a dramatic leap towards the realization of their dreams, usually through a large cash reward.
Or you take drugs. Psychonauts on a vivid mind bending journey to a new conciseness. The only reality we ever truly know is that which we process through our perception of the world around us. If you can shape the reality you want through the use of chemicals what's the difference? The only difference is in the minds of those around you, and since you only rely on your perception, you never really notice.
Of course you could just be bored. We were a generation raised by entertainment. We were catered too on a daily basis. Children's Programming. Children's Radio Stations. Children's Tylenol. Flintstone Vitamins. Our generation has had more attention paid to our wants and desires that any other generation in history. We've been babied to death. Locks on cabinets and doors.
We're a pill popping nation, to be sure. No matter what is wrong in your life, you can get a script to help you out. Can't sleep. Not hungry. Sad. Happy. Hyper. Aches and pains. Erections. We've been fed who knows how many chemicals over our lifetime. Chemicals no other generation had until later in life. What will that mean for us in the future? They have steroids for children.
But of course, if this is a new step in evolution, what are we becoming? A race with a codependent relationship to even more chemicals. How many new diseases have sprung up in the last century? Mutations of previous virii and bacteria mixed with immunity to former vaccines and cures.
Maybe we need to return to a more primitive state. Maybe we need our food raw, our nights cold, or heads hurting. Maybe we need to get in a couple of fights to get the heart pumping and the muscles torn and rebuilt. Stronger. Better. Faster The 6 Million Year Old Man.
You never hear about primitive man's skeletal remains showing signs of osteoporosis. I wonder if Lucy had allergies?
