Do they have the same fighting instinct as most other betta species?

Not so much. Most betta species aren't that aggressive, actually. Territorial certainly, but domestic B. splendens were specifically bred for fighting for many generations, and all fancy types we have today, even though they are no longer used for fighting, still come from those original fighter lines and retain that aggression to some degree. Most wild bettas are territorial in the way gouramis or dwarf cichlids are; they will stick up for their territory and their mates, but it's mostly bluff, and disputes rarely come to blows. When fights do occur, one will step down as soon as it realizes it is beat.

The fish is an oscar, his name is Aristotle. The smaller white fish is a midas hybrid, and a tailless one at that. Here's a shot of the whole tank:


And Marie the hybrid... you can see here her lack of tail. In her case it's a genetic mutation, much like in manx cats, where her spine is shortened. She swims just fine, the tail is mainly used as a rudder anyway, and she uses her dorsal and anal fins for that

Just came in cause I saw your comments in the Atheist group , then I noticed the oscar ! I used to have one , but he committed suicide one night by leaping out of his tank ( yes , the lid was closed ) . They are really cool fish . I'd get one again if I had a slightly larger tank . And maybe put a brick on the lid this time . And might I add , I'd approve your application if it was up to me

Hot Topic, amazingly. I never go in there, but I was at the mall shopping for a gift for my mother and went in on a whim. Found the dress, it fit like a dream, and that's all she wrote. Monday it will be getting a Russian pin or two from a local antique store, and possibly a hat.
