So anyway I've got some property-developing business wheels turning now thanks in part to the pieces of the ruined corpse of a family business I inherited, and I figured I might be able to piggyback my personal project on the company. I can do that, right? Suuuure I can.
Let's hope so, anyway. The point is that I'm going to potentially be in the market for crazy indie software developer / general geek types to fill some project roles. These would probably contracted short-term deals unless you have something especially thrilling to offer to my evil plans, but many of them would be the kinds of functions you could complete online (Santa Cruz would cost you three times what it costs to live anywhere else, so it's ... yeah).
I may also be looking to do some general tech-related business on a more local level, potentially things like graphics, "contract consulting," which is a fancy term for helping people wrestle with MS products and diagnose their hardware failures, and perhaps building and selling custom rigs for the discerning gamer/research student/artist who needs something a little more specific at a lower price. Seems a decent idea, since you'd already have a tech support team or two out there anyway, to offer some free and hopefully unparalleled tech support to the customers. Tech support is always lame, and I think that's where you could actually compete easily.
That's probably a little farther off, but I'm relatively certain I'm going to need a small team for The Project before IGC '05, which is in Oct. IGC is similar to E3, except without so much madness, and a hell of a lot more indie games being shown off -- I think that's in Eugene, Oregon, like it usually is. Generally there are reps from some of the major game companies, usually nVidia shows up with something or other to demonstrate.
[Possible common reactions at this point: "Who the hell is this guy?" or "why talk about needing game developers on this site, you crazy fucker?"]
Yes, well, that's because I'm not interested in the condidates you'll find on a site that is actually related to the subject. Gaming sites have mostly idiots and stoned losers; Programming sites have lots of skilled people, unfortunately most of them are more interested in programming itself than creating a unique project in a bizarrely dynamic art form. Okay, so we've got our share of .. creepy freaks here as well, I don't claim that most people wouldn't put me in that catagory. The point is that I was hoping to find someone who actually found the idea behind it more interesting than the pay and the methods, and could even end up with a team of people I can relate to personally.
Okay, so that last bit is a little too hopeful; if you haven't found anyone to relate to personally in the first 20-some years and you've actually been looking, it's probably getting a little grim -- but at the very least I want my game development team to be populated with creative wierdos.
Just throwing it out there, you never know. If it sounds interesting (there's some info about what I'm doing over there on the "into" section I think -- I'll put something more detailed up later), even if you don't actually want a *job* per say, I'd be happy to tell you more about my ideas. I'll get some website stuff going when there are more specific functions required for the project.
