I don't think there's a less true clich out there in common use.
I suppose I should justify my opinion though, I suppose it matters what the reasons for the absence are, no? I certainly can imagine that a soldier who is called off to war is definitely going to miss their loved one(s), but wouldn't, on some level, there be a risk that while that soldier is away their significant other is falling for someone else?
I guess, to me, that's why "taking time apart" rarely works. To me, all you're really doing is giving someone else a chance to move in on something you once had. To form a wedge that splinters the foundation and shatters the door of what you're away from.
I suppose there are some people who this isn't the case for, but I'm not sure that I'm one of them. I guess time is the only way to tell that.
One thing I know for certain though, whether my heart grew fonder or not would largely depend on why the absence occurred and what occurred during that time.
