Get a small cheap Japanese motorcycle , like a GS500 suzuki. About $2K for a decent one, 50 mpg, cheap cheap to insure, register and maintain...

And it'll still smoke most 4-wheelers.

I hear people say that a lot but those who actually try it tend to like it enough to make it permanent - at least when the weather co-operates.

Carwise, my old '91 CRX-HF got 50+ MPG all day long. Doubt if you could find a non rusty example in your neck of the woods though. The '92-'95 Civic VX does just as well, as does the '88 or so Sprint Turbo but less reliably.
