It's been two weeks since I started my seasonal position and I've already gotten some terrific experience. Several gnarly fires, and plenty of medical aids. Schedule B is completely different from what I've done in the past with my volunteer work. We train harder, we're more disciplined with just about everything, and wildland fires are a totally different animal than a structure fire.

The first two were excellent starters for me. Both were textbook grass fires on relatively level ground. I got a chance to work out the kinks and get a handle on everything I have to be responsible for.

The next was a ripper. Arson in the hillls behind Pine Flat Reservoir. Super steep terrain with heavy brush and poison oak everywhere. I hiked my arse off but we got it contained after about 12 hours. The arsonist was also apparently caught on his way out, too, which is extremely satisfying.

After a week of training, i'm going to be reassigned. Apparently, they're going to put me on Ladder 87, which is a HUGE priviledge. A certain city department already told me I was too short to work on their ladders, but I still get to do it! HA! Suck it, Clovis!

On the subject of hiking:

I'm no stranger to the mountains, and taking long trails through the wilderness. With Yosemite so close, I can't resist the urge to take to the mountains. I AM used to doing it with running shoes and light gear, though. These boots I've had to purchase are KILLING my ankles. They're incredibly well built, but they're also muy difficulto to break in. I think it's going to be faster for my feet to reshape themselves to the boots than the other way 'round. My feet and ankles are bruised, swollen, and tender to the touch. Ai, papi, no mi gusta! Here's hoping they heal up a bit during my next day off.
