Koninginnedag in de Nederlandse Antillen!!!
Yes, Saturday was Queen's Day Birthday here (actually, her real birthday is on the 31st of January, the 30th of April is actually her mother Juliana's Birthday, but since the weather in Holland is miserable on the 31st of January, she wisely decided to keep her mother's birthday as the traditonal celebration day) and since I have taken residency under the protection of Her Majesty, the Queen of the Netherland's, thought it only right and meet to forego my traditonal Lockean Republican beliefs for the day, donned my orange shirt, and became a Monarchist for the day...
So, how do people in the Dutch West Indies celebrate the Queen's Day, you ask? Well, with deep respect and affection for their Queen and adherence and profound reverance for that most fundimental of all of Dutch traditons.... MAKING MONEY!! YAY!!!!
They close off the streets and turn the city into a open Free Market WITH NO TAXES ON GOODS OR SALES!
Lord, but how I love this land and these people...these are MY PEOPLE! A people after my own heart.
Of course there are street musicians and preformances, games and military parades...
But nothing better expresses the Batavian Soul as the ring of the cash register, the clink of the coin, and the word "SALE". See, even this young lass is doing her part to help increase Holland's greatness...
Upon my word, I truly have found my spiritual homeland and my kindred tribe.
God Bless Queen Beatrix and the Netherlands!
Happy Birthday, Your Majesty!!
