U Utah Phillips was an anarchist, singer and story teller, and died a few days back
Among the things I learned in his obituary today is he told Johnny Cash "Nope" to a request to do an album of his songs (best in the West for trains and hobo life), because Utah didn't trust record corporations
And that Utah started his own homeless bed and breakfast in Nevada City using his dough and what he could rustle up, because he didn't like government handouts and their conditions either
When I first moved to Sacramento, it wasn't to Sacramento. We lived in the foothills, and I could hear Phillip's "Hobo Jungle of the Airwaves" a wonderful hour or so of old songs and long stories. Fabulous stories of agitators and generosity and rebellion. Great stuff.
Well, I don't know where old Wobs go when they die. But his cremated ash will float, and become a mote in a capitalist's eye.
