Im preparing both mentally and spiritually to go to Tijuana to meet people in the mexican death metal circuit there.
Some day I am going to write about Mexico's representation in American literature. It's been seen as the true land of freedom, with the deregulation that the US is supposed to engender. In Westerns, the outlaws don't look to California to be free; they look south of the border. Kerouac kept Mexico as his retreat, his chance to reinvent himself. Afterall, it's the libertarian (and anarchist) dream where people can live most of their lives without government interference (unless you're in Chiapas of course). But the reality of libertarianism and anarchism becomes evident: deregulation leads to violence.
it is in this lack of services that another world of regulation and sanctions takes its place. It's the thugs with guns that rule the lonesome highways of Northern Mexico. In Tijuana, the cartels and the traffickers are ones in charge.
A few months ago, the police in TJ had their guns taken away. They held slingshots as a sign of the futility of their mission.
Im so fucking interested. I can't wait!
