Hello Friends, First Post of 05'
I like:
The Eagles of Death Metal - Peace, Love Death Metal- Sport Punk bands from LA or OC (Sum 41, Llink 483, Poseur 617, ad nauseum) are killing the good name of punk rock. The EoDM are punk rock for people who want to love punk rock again.
Cat Power - You Are Free. Is there more beautiful music being made anywhere?
Modest Mouse Good News... - I didn't think I'd like the new record, but it's really good. The vocals are mixed too high, but the tunes are righteous. Popularity hasnt ruined them.
I don't like:
Quentin Tarantino
QT is so fuckin played. Res. Dog and Pulp Fiction were amazing in hundreds of ways, but now I think he's tired. The word Simulacra comes to mind - Style and with no substance.
I know QT is god in these parts and that my blasphemy is complete and grounds for banishment, but Kill Bill I & II left me wanting. 10 or 15 years ago that stylized violence witty repartee, and great music and were cutting edge and QT was the mastermind, but now hes done in my humble opinion.
For christss sake, this is the guy who wrote Natural Born Killers & True Romance. Those along with Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction were an auspicious an entry as any directors ever made into Hollywood with all due respect to Orson Wells. He basically defined his own genre and then virtually disappeared. I must ask QT, what have you done for me lately? He may still have good films in him, but KB I & II werent them.
Supposedly his bag of film references is huge so he might want to reach in to that bag of tricks and come up with something new. Maybe he should look beyond unsung kung fu flicks and Hong Kong noir for influence. Is he a one trick pony, or Flash in the pan?
The hype machine around QT can only last so long, he's gotta make a good movie sometime soon. Jackie Brown was released in 1996 almost 10 years ago.
Wes Anderson (Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums) and Alexander Payne (Election, About Schmidt, Sideways) are on the other hand brilliant with both style, substance, and most importantly, as youve seen above, I like them.
