So, just got back from the Viper Room to see the Supersuckers. They've become a favorite band of mine as they mix hard rockin songs about drinking, screwing and satan...with country songs about drinking, screwing and satan.
The first band of the night was called Lords of Jack and they were...meh. I chose the opportunity to have a drink as I was in kind of a crap mood. They had Black Bush, which has become a favorite of mine, so I pissed away more of my money so I could catch a buzz for...oh, about 15 minutes. La-di-dah.
Anyway, the second band was from San Diego, The Deere Johns. They were fantastic. Straight up roots country. Stand-up bass and brush-stroke snare. You could totally imagine them in some Texas dive in the mid-50's. Sadly, they don't have any music out at the moment.
Finally, the Supersuckers. I'd never seen them before and was looking forward to it (even though my Trixel wasn't there to enjoy it with me. ) Anyway, I stood in front of Rontrose, the lead guitarist.
Yeah, right in front. Even if it means sitting outside for an hour, it's good to get there early sometimes. They played a bunch of new songs and a bunch of old songs.
They even did their patented 'Fake Encore' where they pretend to go off, we pretend to cheer and they pretend to be surprised and return. (Eddie Spaghetti, their leader, said every time a crappy band does the lame excercise of the 'encore' a baby gets AIDS. He added thanks to the 'fake encore' a fake baby gets fake AIDS. I don't know, their humor's kind of dark...which I appreciate a lot.)
Anyway, the show was great. I got rid of my bad mood by rocking out (though some drunk hoochie spilled half her drink down the back of my shirt...ahh, the rock show.) Next time Trixel will be with me so we can sing along to the joys of satan.

I've always thought their name was delightfully oxymoronic.
