So... I know I've got a lot of changes to make it my life but I think I'll wait to think about those because...
Spain!
I leave in 18 days. I'm starting to get super annoyed with the University in Toledo because they haven't told me anything about the family I'll be staying with! I have such a strong urge to find out whatever I can about them because I'm supposed to get them a gift. I'm so afraid of bringing something that they'll completely hate which will ruin the first impression and make them think I'm some stupid, arrogant American.
I stayed in Germany shortly after I graduated from high school and have a bit of an understanding of how awkward it feels to be in a foreign environment. I want to have the best experience and I want to get along with the family because they're who I'll be speaking with the most often and I want to learn as much as possible.
When I stayed in Germany I feel like I acted like an ass to my hosts and I barely attempted to speak German. My family is German and I have relatives in Germany. My grandfather served in WWII and is extremely proud of his German roots. He taught me how to count to ten in German when i was 4. I have no excuse for my behavior and for ignoring the world around me while I had the chance to visit a culture so different from my own.
I want my summer in Spain to be life-changing. I want to learn another language and see the world through a new lens. Quiero vivir una buena vida. Quiero tener una buena experencia. Quiero tener una forma para expressarme mejor que lo que yo tengo ahora.
I want soo much to speak Spanish that this whole adventure is kind of a test. Either I'll become fluent or I will give up the hope of ever speaking Spanish.
I think I might try to find pple on SG who live in Spain...
doing it...NOW!

I think your concern and effort is enough to take you off the ugly american list. Someone willing to host an american student isn't likely to judge too harshly.
