Good news: The company in LA wants to fly me down for an in-person interview.
Bad news: They need me to have a passport and I do not have one.
Good news: They're comfortable waiting for me to get one. Hard not to think of that as an awfully good sign.
Bad news: I don't have my birth certificate here, which I need for the application.
Good news: It's at my parents' place! Road trip!
Bad news: My girlfriend thinks one of her cats ran away. (We're not entirely sure, because those guys are invisible when they want to be and her house has a lot of hiding places.) She doesn't want to leave the city this weekend, and I'm not sure I want to leave her. I'm no cat person, but I know what it's like to be worried about a pet.
Good news: The cat was on the deck this morning. We figure it bolted out the kitchen door (my suspicion is yesterday night when we were taking the trash out) and spent the night under the deck.
I'm absolutely thrilled to think that I have this great opportunity in LA... and at the same time sort of terrified about leaving everything I know and love far behind.
It's never just easy, is it?

Cats seem to love being under decks. Once I got a phone call from my friend at 1 am, and when I picked up she was very flustered and said "Hi it's me. Do you have a crowbar?" When I said no she said OK and hung up. The next day she called back to explain that her cat had zipped under the deck and was too scared to come out. Eventually she called her work and they sent over a truck and crew to get the cat out ( ). So several months later for her birthday I got a crowbar. She thanked me but looked puzzled until she saw the tag I had put on it - "Feline Extraction Device".
