R.I.P., Misty.
My sister spreading her best friend's ashes at the polo field.
A little background:
The polo field is where my sister's program, Therapeutic Horsemanship of Hawaii is located. Our friend Misty had just gotten certified as an instructor for the program the day she was killed in a motorcycle accident. The field was quite possibly her favorite spot in the world. All week, all she could talk about was getting to the ranch on the weekend to work with the kids out there.
As well as an instructor there, she was also a motorcyclist. I had the pleasure of riding with her on many occasions. About 200 bikers, from at least 6 different clubs, came out to her memorial today, as well as many of her fellow volunteers and several of her students.
This was a fairly crappy video taken by one of the other instructors on a camera phone. It doesn't even come close to capturing the feeling of the whole scene. All I can say is, those who know me will tell you that I, for the most part, am a pretty stoic person. When she rode past us and tossed out the ashes and everyone started cheering, I actually had trouble breathing for a second. The video truly doesn't capture it at all. It was easily the most emotional moment of my life. Seeing someone who was such a big part of my life, in what was essentially dust form, being scattered in her favorite place in the world to be, by my sister who was her best friend. I looked around the crowd of burly, grizzly bikers, all decked out in club patches and whatnot...not a single one had dry eyes. Right up until Dana got in front of the crowd. Someone, I don't have any idea who, started cheering. That got everyone up and into it. Again, the video doesn't quite capture it. 200 people clapping and hollering, while Sarah McClachlan (too tired to spell-check) was blasting...I don't even know how to describe it.
Anyways, this is all super-fatigued drunken rambling at this point. All I can really say is, rest in peace Misty girl. You're riding with the angels now.
We'll all miss you, even though you're always with us.
