i finally picked up a Pavement record today. i grabbed "Slanted & Enchanted". i can't believe it has taken me this long to get Pavement into my collection. i have been a huge Sonic Youth fan for a while now, and i always knew Pavement was a group i would love. i figured they would be somewhere between Sonic Youth and the Pixies and that seems pretty accurate.
needless to say i love this record and am ashamed that it took me this long to discover them.
we love you Pavement, oh yes we do...
q: do you think it is essential to understand everything that is happening in the music to appreciate it?
a: i don't think you need to at all. when i listen to Coltrane or Sonic Youth, there is this energy and while no one can really understand exactly what they are doing, it comes across more importantly as an emotion. it is a feeling and i think too many people disregard certain music because they don't understand it is trying to convey a certain emotion rather than a chord change.
