time to play spot the quote, kids. this is an easy one and informative one:
'Every day, St Catherine of Siena would whip herself three times. The first whipping was for her own sins. Her second whipping was for the sins of the living. The third was for the sins of all dead people'.
this is the woman, the saint i was named after. i like to think i am carrying on her life's work in my daily actions, heh.
last night there was a programme on called 'flesh and the devil' - it was about celibacy in organised religion and contained some of the most disturbing things i've ever seen on tv. and this was channel four, folks. disturbing central (you are all familiar with the SALON i assume). anyway, it was good friday in the philippines and people were whipping themselves. at first it looked like nothing, you couldn't really make out what they were using but it was obviously like a cat o'nine tails or something. then it cut to these guys lying in the dirt, their backs blood red. i think, 'oh that's some kind of ritual paint to symbolize the blood they shed for their sins and love of christ etc...'. but no. it was actually blood. blood like i've never seen, i mean their whole backs were in ribbons. and they were doing it to themselves in religious ecstasty. THEN it cut to a shot of a guy in the dirt, all splayed out and there was a kid of about 6 or 7 beating him. something of a culture shock for me then. anyway the whole programme was interesting, but that's the bit that will stay with me.
going to see lost in translation to help me forget.
