Good afternoon SG!
It's the last week of April can you believe it? This month has felt like it has dragged on so much but it's starting to get very fun with everything opening up again.
So start your week off with our lovely little chat with @lokia about her art!
So what can you tell us about the art that you do?
Okay so I have ALWAYS been an artist, since I was very little I’ve always found peace within creative chaos. I studied art at school, then at college and now I study art at University. Within my degree I have full range to create whatever I may want; any theme, any medium and any purpose.
I prefer to create art that makes people think and I like to evoke deep emotion in those who view my work. Whether I’m studying the human mind, trauma and mental illness, or the human body and natural form, (all themes which are very dominant in my work) I enjoy making things abstract, or have open ended interpretations, simply because I love seeing where it takes the viewers mind.
Can you tell us about what you are working on right now?
Currently I’m working on two big ongoing projects; “The breast study” & “Understanding and exploring mental health and well-being.”
I won’t go into much detail about the mental health project as it is more of a personal one.
However the breast study is one I’m very keen to discuss. I began this as a university project, and decided to take it much further. No two breasts are the same, and they’re so beautiful because of that, I wanted to celebrate those differences while spreading breast awareness.
I have created various digital drawings of women’s breasts (many of which are wonderful fellow SGUK models) and have created an Instagram to display these works of art. Some drawings are more on the realistic side, where as others are so abstract that without being told - you’d have no idea that they are drawings of breasts!
I am selling various sized prints of every drawing I create, and donating 25% from each piece sold to Breast Cancer Research UK.
The Instagram is called
your.breastfriends if anyone would like to check it out and show their support.
What artists inspire you?
Tim Burton’s work and illustrations have heavily inspired me throughout my life so far, he explores the extraordinary and I think it’s incredible. Still to this day he never ceases to amaze me.
Another artist who’s life and work I’ve studied for many years is photographer Francesca Woodman. Her work explored her mental well-being and the female form, I find it very moving, inspirational and powerful.
Most recently, I’ve studied the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, as I’m drawn to the abstract, expressive nature of his practice.
What mediums do you use to create the art that you do?
I’m very experimental with my work and enjoy using various mediums. I have recently been focusing mostly on digital work as it better suits my current project. However I enjoy painting, creating images with ink, fashion design using unexpected items such as leaves or wax, creating plush toys from recycled materials, digital logo design, jewellery making, using mixed media to create abstract collages, and so much more.
Do you have any projects that you hope to work on some day?
I have plans to try clay sculpting again soon, however it’s never gone well for me in the past! But if I never try again, I’ll never improve!
I would also like to try out some large scale work, as I usually stick to a familiar size and would like to push myself further.
Regarding your art what do you hope to achieve in the future?
One of many long term goals I have is to create and run my own art therapy magazine. It’s a subject very close to my heart and something I’m incredibly passionate about.
I just dream that one day I can use my work to support not only those who suffer from mental health difficulties, and those around them and caring for them, but for anyone who wants to learn more about the struggles people face on a daily basis and what people can do to better support others and themselves. I’d love to be able to offer people the support and understanding they deserve.
