San Diego Comic Con 2008
OMG I have never experienced such an event where everyone is next to you as you walk. It was impossible to NOT bump into someone. In other words, the convention center was crowded. It actually reminded me of when I spent New Year's Eve 1999 in Times Square, just the idea of "crowd"
So on preview night, after picking up our badges, we headed over to the exhibit hall, this is where all of the booths are located. We came across a booth that gave away free stuff the entire week. My friends & I were able to grab free admission passes to the movie "Tropic Thunder" which isn't even in theaters yet. The movie was screened at the Horton plaza later that night (10 P.M.) which is about a 7 minute walk from the convention. In the meantime, we walked around some more, I spotted a few artists & had them draw some of their work for me. These sketches weren't free but I love their stuff so it was well worth it. We were also given these ridiculously large Wonder Woman messenger bags. They were a hot item.
So it was now 9 P.M., we left the convention center. As my friends & I are waiting for the crossing guard to let us cross (duh) there was a 14 year old girl with braces staring at me. I paid no mind to her. She continued to stare, I finally just looked at her & asked "can I help u?" she chuckled & apologized. She wanted a picture of her & myself. I told her that I'm famous (lying of course) & I don't want pictures of me floating around. She said that she'll photoshop it. I still declined. I then asked her if she watches tv, she answered "yes" I then said this to her "wellI'm Chris Hansen with Dateline NBC & we're doing a story on adults who try to meet teens online" she didn't get the joke but some guy who was near us said "ha ha ha, Dateline" he got the joke, I felt good about it lol. The crossing guard finally let us walk, we left her & she was like "come back" I have no idea what she was plotting.
So anyway, we walked over to Horton plaza, went into a parking garage & used the elevator to get to the theater. Horton Plaza is an outdoor mall, pretty neat. I haven't seen an outdoor mall since my trip to Florida 2 years ago for Spring Recess. We saw that there is a line for Tropic Thunder. We waited. In the meantime, one of us would go & get food (which is conveniently located on the same floor) while the other 2 wait on line. My first friend goes. He comes back, I then go get something. As I am picking up my food order, my other friend comes by & tells me to hurry up, the line is moving. We bolt over there, throw all of the food in our Wonder Woman messenger bags. We find decent seats & eat our food. So at the end of the night, it is not about 1 A.M. we are back in our hotel room. Tropic Thunder is a very very funny movie. I am glad to have caught this one. I highly recommend this flick to everyone. You will laugh 'till you stop.
So Thursday whips around. My friends & I attended the "Tiny Toons/Freakazoid" panel. I had a lot of fun with this one. They showed quick clips of each series. I forgot how these cartoons were a work of genius. They really made me laugh.
Next was"The Day the Earth stood still" panel in Hall H. Hall H is the mother of all panel rooms. Its HUGE & the line for Hall H is ridiculous & intimidating to even tackle. We saw Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connolly & 2 other guys who wrote the movie or something, they weren't very interesting. Keanu Reeves, he's a real airhead. He is not well spoken at all. When he talks, he reminds me of the USA's current idiot President Bush (he's not my President because I didn't vote for that S.O.B) Keanu seems like a cool guy & all but he was likea dummy. When he first came out to introduce the panel, it seemed like it was in the script that he poorly memorized & not coming from the heart if that makes sense to you. Jennifer on the other hand is very well spoken & I expected that from her. Also, we got free shirts for the movie. After that panel concluded, Mark Wahlberg came out with some woman (can't remember her name, it starts with an M) & some other guys with them. The movie they discussed is "Max Payne" which is based on the Playstation 2 video game. Mark is another uneducated speaker but he had charisma & I can see how girls want to fuck him. One girl shouted out "I love u Mark" who is sitting next to her boyfriend. Honorable, huh?! After that, my friends & I left. Oh do we regret leaving, apparently, there was a surprise panel that showed up after the Max Payne event. It was Hugh Jackman who was promoting the movie "Wolverine" I was like NOOOOOOOOOO. They even showed Deadpool in one of the previews.
Afterwards, we headed over to the Exhibit hall & explored some more. Soon, G4's Attack of the Show (AOTS) aired their program as part of their special comic con episode. I was able to watch a bit but it became waaaaay too crowded & the damn Comic Con security guards began to tell ppl to leave because it's a fire hazard. The Goddamn comic con is a fire hazard itself hahaha. I was able to get Kevin Pereira's attention with my video camera, he waved & started to talk to me. He's actually a pretty cool guy. He began taking pics with other ppl without a problem, he just talked to random ppl around while he was on stage before the show began to broadcast. Olivia Munn on the other hand, is a priss. She was talking on her cell phone the whole time, not bothering to interact with fans or anyone else like Kevin. She had to step off stage for a bit, she had a bunch of security guards around her, protecting her from the nerds I'm assuming & not saying hi or anything like that. She is a total phony. I always knew she was, now I have it all on video tape to prove it. Its like this, u go to comic con to have fun & Olivia obviously wasn't having any. People like that should not even bother to attend.
Later that night, there was a special screening to the sequel to "The Lost Boys" titled "The Lost Boys The Tribe" I was unaware that a sequel was even taken seriously. I remember the original title was "The Lost Girls" & it was supposed to be made years & years ago. Now this just became a big joke so my friends & I were about to watch this for a good laugh but we decided not to. Instead, we got our energy back by resting in the hotel room & planning out what we want to see for the rest of the days ahead.
Friday:
So we want to see the "Watchmen" panel with Dave Gibbons (artist for the Watchmen graphic novel) & others but I don't have much faith in the movie adaptation. The graphic novel Watchmen is just too damn good for a movie to even match. The only way Watchmen will pass as a movie is if its at the same level as "The Dark Knight" So we decide to pass on that. Instead, I find out that Dan Aykroyd & Ernie Hudson are promoting their new "Ghostbusters" video game which will release in October. As I am waiting around, I find out that they cancelled. So I leave.
As I'm walking down the stairs, I hear a comic-con staff member yell out that Hideo Kojima & Yoji Shinkawa are signing free autographs. I immediately rush to their location. I stand in line. Meanwhile, the kid who is in front of me smells so bad, there is no mistake that he hasn't showered in a while. Soon, he leaves the line, giving up. I was relieved. Every noe & then, Hideo Kojima goes outside & waves at everyone. We all cheer. He was so cool. So I finally get in. Yoji Shinkawa signs my autograph book first but instead, he does a quick sketch of Solid Snake's face. How cool is that?? Then Hideo Kojima signs his name in my book. They can only say "hi" in English. They can only speak Japanese. This basically made my whole comic con experience. I've been following Metal Gear since NES. It was fate that brought me to meet them both. Their visit was a surprise, not on the schedule..CRAZY.
After that, Exhibit hall, the usual.
AOTS broadcasted their second special comic con episode. I stuck around for a bit.
Later that night, my friends & I attend the "Spaced" panel. For those who have never heard of Spaced, it was a show that ran 14 episodes 9 years ago. It stars Simon Pegg & everyone else from Shaun of the dead, even the director. The same director, Edgar Wright, also did Hot Fuzz. So they really are friends in real life. Reason why Spaced did not last for long is because they started to work on Shaun of the dead. The show was only aired in the UK as far as I know. They have now released the DVD set for the show. When they came out, they showed us 3 episodes of Spaced that the fans picked out. They were hilarious.
Saturday: Now we are in the "Futurama" panel. We saw Matt Groening (Simpsons creator), Billy West (known for Stimpy's voice from Ren & Stimpy), Katey Sagal (Peggy Bundy from MarriedWith Children), Maurice LaMarche (Voice of Egon from Ghostbusters, The Brain from Pinky & the Brain & basically any character who sounds like Orson Welles) & other voice actors & producers from Futurama were here. At the conclusion of this panel, a "Simspons" panel began. None of the voice actors attended but all of the producers writers & such including Matt Groening were here. They showed clips from the new Simpsons Halloween special that will be aired in 2 months & discusses the future of the Simpsons. Afterwards, we went over to the exhibit hall.
Later that night, prepare for a night of suckage; My friends & I attended the new cartoon series that will be aired on Nicktoons called "Wolverine & the X-Men" they showed us the first 3 episodes of the series & I have this to sayBOY, DID THAT SHOW SUCK. Its NOTHING like the comic book & they made Wolverine the leader of the X-Menhow STUPID is that??? Wolverine is a loner, they completely destroyed his character in this new shitty tv show. The sad part is, the guys behind it were pretty cool ppl & I feel bad saying this, I feel like I picked on a retard or something. All of the fan boys were clapping, my friends & I just looked at each other & rolled our eyes. So after that, prepare for more disaster. A movie titled "Mutant Chronicles" which stars Ron Pearlman, Thomas Jane & Devon Aoki (Sin City), was shown. We are watching a work print of the movie & we are the first audience to watch this. Thomas Jane & the director introduce the movie. I believe Thomas Jane was drunk the whole time, either that, or he is a very insecure guy. He was really into the audience & the whole comic con experience. Overall, he seemed like a cool guy. So the movie is now playing, ppl begin to walk out, I start laughing on the inside. So the movie is over with & it was HORRIBLE. The cast come out, everyone cheered. Everyone was really excited to see Ron Pearlman. Some people were given the chance to ask questions & all questions were aimed at Ron Pearlman. One fanboy asked him why he made this movie; Ron Pearlman paused then said "ummm, the script" my friends & I almost laughed out loud but we held it in. Other fanboys asked Ron to quote a video game line that he did the voiceover for, Ron had no idea what he was talking about, it was hilarious. People shouldn't expect actors to remember certain things from past projects. I mean, they have done so much stuff that u think they even remember. Its like someone asking me "what did u do in the month of September when u were 12 years old. Hell if I know. I don't even remember the last time I blew my nose for Christ sake. So that was a fun experience. Also, as Ron Pearlman was answering questions, Thomas Jane is drinking water out of the glass jug, it was pretty funny & now I am convinced that he was drunk that night.
Sunday, last day: The only thing that was really going on (at least in my opinion) is the Harold & Kumar panel. Yes, both guys were there, John Cho (Harold) & Kal Penn (Kumar), Kal Penn was actually pretty quite most of the time, John Cho is a pretty funny guy. He was interacting with the audience, made some funny remarks. It was a lot of fun. Also, the 2 genius' behind the movies, the writers Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg, were there. They may even write a 3rd movie in the Harold & Kumar series. Its more yes then no & I'm pretty confident that they will make a 3rd movie.
My friends left the comic con for good at around 2 P.M., afterwards, we ate lunch & then headed back to the hotel. We then took the hotel shuttle bus to the San Diego Zoo. For some reason, most of the animals were asleep during our visit. I guess we caught them after "feeding time". We actually managed to cover the entire zoo in about 4 hrs. non-stop walking. Afterwards, we called up the hotel to pick us up. We were taken to Horton Plaza to eat dinner. Afterwards, we walked back to the hotel & just relaxed. Our flight left the next morning. Good-Bye San Diego, I hope to see you next July.
Things I learned from Comic Con:
Everything is a line. You will find yourself waiting on line for all panels & screenings, autographs & anything else inside the convention center. Be prepared to WAIT.
Also, if your not a walker, you better learn fast because all u will be doing is walking. Be prepared to walk. If your out of shape, that's gonna be a tough time.
Also, while your watching one panel that catches your interest, you may be missing out on another panel that you really want to check out but its impossible to see both. You have to choose one. This is where "who is better" or "who is worth it" decision making kicks in.
Each morning, my friends & I ate at "Izzy's" for breakfast. It used to be a Sushi bar from what the locals told me. Izzy's has only been around for a few months. The place is clean, organized, & very convenient. We were surprised that it was never crowded. So we always got out food fast, just the way we wanted it before our long days began.
Things I learned from San Diego:
Homeless ppl are a part of their culture unlike New York City. They won't bother to ask for money, I only encountered one homeless guy who asked me for change. Otherwise, you will see them sleeping inside a sleeping bag (what you use at camps). Reading a book, minding their own business. Its pretty strange.
In New York City, if u cross the street while a car is coming your way, do not expect him to stop for you. In San Diego, its not like that. Cars will stop & let u walk. There is common courtesy that exists in San Diego.
At one point, my friends & I were lost & looking at the map. A woman passed by us & assisted us out of her own free will. In New York City, u will not get that. If u ask the right person, they will help u but otherwise, u really shouldn't ask for directions in NYC unless they are a police officer or some other public official.
San Diego is more of a downtown hang out spot than a place to live in. I would not want to live here. Would I go to school here, sure. Would I take a week long vacation here, sure. But I would never live here. People live like on the beach which is like the next town over. I have to check that out next time.
I am sure I missed a few things here & there from comic con, I have yet to watch what I video recorded. I plan on editing it, making it neater to watch.

hmm i dont know what i wanna be this year, what are u doing?
