Wow, now I've been in a car accident
I was hit by a car when I was on my bike when I was younger, but until today I'd never been in a car that hit or was hit by another car.
That all changed when my friend and I were going to lunch.
We were pulling up at an intersection, and the car in front of me stopped really short before the car in front of it. Maybe 1 1/2 or 2 lengths. WAY TO SHORT, and I stopped really close to his car, and I figured he was gonna do one of those "roll to get closer to the car in front of you" moves.
So, all is well and all of a fucking sudden. SMACK.
We get rear ended.
Which in turn propels my van into the car in front of us.
I immediately make sure my friend is ok (bit of whiplash actually) and then I look in my rear view mirror to see a pretty young kid freaking the fuck out.
I get out to make sure the people in front of me and the kid that hit us were ok as well.
I make my way to the first car, and its an elderly gentleman and his wife (maybe in their 70s). Both were ok, and I described to him what happened.
Then I went to go talk to this little kid, who clearly had the fear of god in him when I stepped out of the car.
Anyways, he seemed like he was dealing with the situation ok, and he was very polite, so we went to check our cars for damage (the back bumper of the old man's car had definitely been dented and scratched due to my van hitting it) and my car looked ok, nothing really wrong with it.
So while we were checking for damage in the back, the old man and his wife SPED OFF!
We couldn't fucking believe it. With no real damage to my car, we just decided to leave and not call it in. (Which, I'm sure the kid was really happy about. You could tell he was freaking out and was really worried. He might have been 16 or 17.)
I totally forgot to get the kids number and insurance just in case, but I totally spaced it out due to the fact of how random it was with the old man driving off....not even getting our information or anything.
So we just left, and went to lunch.
When talking to my friend about why the old man sped off we figured a couple of scenarios that would have made him do that. One being he had a suspended license, and wasn't supposed to be driving, didn't have a license, or if he had caused another accident it would have been revoked.
Clearly the kid who hit us was responsible, so I don't know why he would leave. Maybe someone who knows all the laws would be able to answer that.
Still, I'm ok..and my friend is fine minus that whiplash.
Question is. If you were me, would you tell your Mom about this or not?
I'm somewhat thinking I won't...because A. I don't want her to worry because I am going on a 30+ hour trip next weekend and B. I don't feel like her chastising me about forgetting to get the information.
What do you think? I'd really like to hear sincere opinions on this. Or what would you have done?
