What is human awareness moving towards? Are we as a species essentially different today than we were a thousand years ago? As technology allows us to communicate across the world at light speed, the feedback loop of the human psyche gets shorter and more intense. We see more suffering and vicariously feel more human emotion than we ever have before. We receive such a huge volume of stimulus that we have to filter most of it out. We arrive at opinions more quickly and with less contemplation. We behold the pageant of Mankind with awe and disgust. We behold the tragedies that Nature and Physics inflict on us with a mixture of fear and excitement. Death has an endless array of guises, but we can't believe that any of them is meant for us.

Is it all building to something? Is there some threshold at which we will break through to a new kind of consciousness? Is life in the universe random, like a pinball machine? Is there such thing as progress in anything but science?

These are the things I wonder about.
