Well, here's a new post, courtesy of the Asian Bird Fru, or whatever the hell I have that has me sick from work. Yay for decent fever, slight headache, achy joints, and coughing up weird crunchy phlegm! Not like y'all needed that yummy description of what's wrong with me
Spent the last week or so moving into our new house. Last weekend we got all our crap into the house; problem being that we don't have any freakin furniture! Well, that's a lie, I waited to move in till we at least got a bed. BTW, Sleep-by-number beds freakin rock! Especially if you have two people in the same bed that can't agree on if it should be firm or soft. I haven't slept this well in ages. I pulled my computer desk out of my friend's barn (yay for free temp storage), cleaned it up, and chucked the upper tier bit that got water damage (particle board really hates water BTW!) Got the 3 pieces that survived upstairs, but had to disassemble most of it to get it up the narrow staircase; after all 1920s era houses weren't known for wide stairs and that kinda makes me sad. Put together a few bookshelves and have been sorting stuff into them for the last few days; mostly my computer certification books and misc stuff. I still have something like 8 boxes of books left to unpack, but I have to wait till the other 3 bookcases get shipped here to unpack those. Still have probably 5-6 boxes of clothes, but I'm waiting on the dresser we ordered there too. On the plus side my Cisco 1811W router should be here today, which means I can go pick up my old computer I sold to my sister from my sister's apartment. She's giving it back since she's working in Alaska now as a travel nurse and doesn't need a desktop. Once I do that, then we need a desk for Meghan... then we can both play WoW and whatever together, yay!
That all being said, I'm going to touch on events that occurred yesterday. It seems to me that what I'm going to say might be taken the wrong way by some, sheerly because the follow-up could be construed as using the deaths of those poor students as a political tool. I don't know if I can clearly show the difference between what I fear people might think I'm doing, and what I mean. I assure you this is purely my opinion on the matter, a burst of outrage that this was allowed to happen... and more outrage because it was preventable.
What kind of sick fuck just up and decided to start shooting people like this? 32 people killed in Viginia Tech. Scary thing is that I've been there; had friends who went there, and a buddy of mine is finishing off his PhD in Geology there... still haven't gotten ahold of him yet either One of the things that pisses me off about this is the media's rush to "get the facts out," but these halfwits just repeat anything that gets told to them. First there was just one shooting, now there's two. First there was one shooter, then it was two, now it's one again. First he was in custody, then he was dead.
This leads into the second section, politics. During this whole deal, half the news channels started spouting off about how guns should be banned, how the 94 AWB didn't go far enough... what really cheeses me off is that these talking heads pulled shit outta their ass, pulled so-called "gun experts" up on screen to run their mouths about shit these people obviously had no clue. Some of that crap, the only people who would swallow it would be people who didn't know any better. One of the talking heads I saw early in the shootings episode swore up and down that the guy doing this had to have been using an AK or an AR with hi-cap mags because "There is no way he could kill this many people without one," and then he went on about how civilians shouldn't be allowed to own any type of "Assault rifles."
Excuse me? Back the fuck up. As evidenced by what really happened, the guy had 2 9mm pistols, and in the second shooting he had chained the goddamn doors shut so people couldn't get away. How's that for "Had to have an AR or an AK" ? Shooting fish in a barrel, and goddamn horrible. Oh, and firearms were prohibited on the VT campus. Only the campus police were allowed to have guns.
You know what makes me the saddest about all this? It was preventable. How? Last year there was a bill that got shot down that would have made it legal to carry a concealed weapon on Virginia college campuses. If it had been passed, chances are you would be waking up today to a much less confusing news report; one that would read a lot like the shooting in Utah a few months ago where a CCW (Concealed Carry Weapon) permit holder shot and killed a guy rampaging with a shotgun.
Instead, today we all wake up in the aftermath of 32 defenseless people slaughtered like cattle. If the state takes your right to self defense away, then the state is responsible for your defense, yes? Sadly, no. There are two cases argued up to the Supreme Court that ended with the decision that the police are responsible to the people as a whole, not to the people as an individual. Ie. Tough shit that you got killed, but you can't sue us because we didn't save you. Now, that ruling makes sense, because when you look at all the times the police failed to save someone; they'd have their asses sued into the dirt and would never have enough cash to actually police anything again.
Now I ask you, if the police aren't responsible for your defense, and the state won't let you defend yourself, what do you do? Sadly, most people today don't have any measure of spine and they get slaughtered like the poor folks yesterday. There was no "Let's Roll!" like there was on United Airlines Flight 93. No mad rush to take down the gunman. Right now, some people are probably thinking I'm a heartless ass, but let me ask you... if someone is pointing a gun at you and you know he's going to shoot you, chances are you are dead. If that's the case, then why in the hell are you going to just stand there and make it easy for this asshole? FIGHT BACK! If you just stand there, you are dead. You could replay this 100 times, and all 100 times you are dead. But if you fight back, you won't be dead 100 out of 100 tries.
Most of the classrooms I saw at the VT engineering building weren't small. They probably held anywhere between 30-200 people depending on the room. Now, this guy was using 2 Glocks, each with a mag capacity of about 17 rounds... so assuming he walked in fully loaded, he had 34 rounds. If you had a room of 30 people and everyone rushed the asshole at once, yeah you'd have a lot of people shot, but he'd miss a few, and not kill a few... and the asshole would've been stopped at the first room. And that's assuming no one there could find anything to use as a weapon, and assuming everything turned out in the shooter's favor.
Folks, what I'm saying here is stop being sheep. Seriously. Take control of your life back from the government. The government does *NOT* exist to take care of you; it never has, and only recently (in a historical sense) did anyone seem to think that's what it was for. It's not there to be your dad or your mom. It's there to combine the efforts of *ALL* Americans into something much larger than we are individually. What most people seem to forget is that the government is not some mythical perfect entity. It was staffed by people just like the rest of us. How many of you have seen police officers power trip out on people? I'm not shitting on all cops because I respect the hell outta anyone who makes it their job to try and save people, but that's a good example of what can go wrong. Don't give the government any more power than you have to, because the asshole who gets to decide what to do with that power might be a power-tripping asshole.
Stop avoiding responsibility. Take control of your life. Stop being afraid and realize you can defend yourself.
Stop being sheep. I served 7 years in the military and I refuse to be a willing victim. Fight back.

And I feel you with the media B.S. Our country's media are composed 90-percent of liberals (the last I checked), but people forget that the many media outlets that disseminate news to us are BUSINESSES. Of course they're going to rush like hell to be the first to put their two cents in or worse seem 'socially relevant', which means twisted and distorted facts. To whose benefit? Not ours...to the businesses that are supposed to just report the news, and that's all. You hear that whirring sound? That's Edward R. Murrow, spinning in his casket...
As for people wanting big government...well, too many of us are lazy and have taken too much for granted.
I wish that was a trend that would die fast.
To all that you said: amen, my friend.
