Once upon a time, there was this boy. Let's call him Boy X. Now, Boy X has a friend, Girl Z. Boy X and Girl Z have known each other for a long time, but they only really started becoming really good friends a few years ago, when Boy X was in his graduating year of high school. Back then Boy X started to realize that he liked Girl Z more than friends. But then he left town for 7 months and only talked to her through email and one or two phone conversations.
Flash forward: Boy X comes back to town and directs a play for the community theatre, in which Girl Z acts and choreographs. During said Play, Boy X tells Girl Z how he feels, and Girl Z says wait until after the play is done. After the play, nothing is really said, but Boy X and Girl Z still hang out as friends. In december, before he leaves for vacation, tells her how he feels again. Girl Z says she doesn't reciprocate, but wants to elaborate, and promises too after he returns from vacation and Boy X accepts it. He returns from vacation to have Girl Z say they should go out for coffee sometime so they can talk. He tries to set up a time and place, but Girl Z keeps stalling. Boy X calls Girl Z a week ago and leaves a message. Girl Z still has not called back and appears to be avoiding Boy X.

The kicker is she's the last person I'd ever expect to do that kind of thing....
