Ok, my dilema...
I want to change my major, kind of. I am a Elementary Education major with an emphasis in Literacy/Information Science.
As I get farther into my studies, I find that I am really loving the English classes. So, I went to see my adviser in the English Dept. (I have two, one in the Education Dept. and one in the English Dept.) about the possibility of picking up an English degree and then getting the degree to teach K-5 as well as Secondary.
The advantage of course, would that that I would be more marketable with the ability to teach K-12. I am male, and there is a shortage in the elementary schools of male teachers, and there seems to be one around here for secondary ed in English.
Also, if I were an English major and I decided to go to graduate school, I would be able to study for a MFA or Doctorate in English (not saying any of this would happen, just not wanting any doors closed on me). This would open doors for me at colleges and universities. If I had a masters in education, that would only increase my pay, but not increase my opportunities....
I love the idea of teaching the little ones, especially K and 1st grade. But I like the idea of having an English degree...
The downside? 10 extra classes in the English Dept. alone. Not sure if I would have to take extra classes in the Education Dept. or not, I will find out tomorrow.
I know I am thinking out loud, but I would love opinions if anybody wants to share them with me
