First off, I wanted to say that we ran out of toilet paper and all yesterday we had to wipe ourselves with napkins. The only napkins we own happen to be pink and purple featuring peguses. Needless to say, We felt a lot better about life yesterday.
Now that it's summer... it gets dark relatively late. Like 9pm.
8:15- So last night we decided to go for a walk to Hanafords. Its only about 10 blocks, not even a mile, from the apartment. it was still sunny, with a tint of orange in the sky. As we are appraoching hannafords a cool breeze whips us from behind and I turn around. The sky is still bright, but in the distance there's black clouds rolling in. They look like waves crashign and foaming along, black with white foam. Everythign under them is a thick and subtle black and white. We continue to walk.
8:25- We arrive at the parking lot to hanafords, the clouds are thicker, you and litterally see them rolling and moving along. The edges of the sky have flicks of white clouds like japanese finger waves, pulling the black quickly through the sky. Orange rays or light push themselves through the cracks and make streams to the ground below. Everything has turned soft at teh edges and black and white. No color beneath the clouds except for the tiny beams of sun, illuminating strands of life below. A car rearview mirror, a mail box, a foot of railing on the cart return.. they all glisten with a cheery glow and draw your attention from the black around them.
8:30- The clouds begin to roll above our heads and engulf us in a darkness. Its strange to watch the sky blacken the air around you and snuff otu the color. The wind is blowing my hair in my face and Fridaylook nervously up while pointing out that we have to walk home if it rains. I feel small and amazed by the beauty of nature. Standing in a grubby parking lot. A controled setting. Perfect painted lines, with perfect cemented sidewalks. Everything so neat, organized. But the sky is Black ink poured into the sink. Swirling and tumbling. It makes even thisorderly parking lot look chaotic.
8:30 we go inside and beging to grab a couple tiny things. We are outside within 10 minutes.
8:40- The sky is pitch black. Its darker than midnight. The only thing that betrays that there is still a sliver of day left, fighting to resist the dark, is the light blue blotches trying to peek through the waves of foam black int the sky. The wind is whipping our clothes tight against our bodies and it feels ominious. It smells like rain and electricity. We start to walk fast.
8:45- Bright bolts of lightning twist in the sky. They don't go staight up and down.. They spill across the sky in a treebranch pattern. Sometimes going up and left or down and then into the spae of a rainbow. The world is funny black and white now, it's features are blurred, the contrast too low. But the lightning that bursts in the sky makes splashes of colors. Pinks to purples, highlighting the edges of our faces. Friday looks more beautiful in this wild setting with the sky shattering and spinning abouve us, reflecting disorder on us.
8:50- it begins to pour. It pours thing long drops that feel softs but whip us in the faces. We begin to run. Our clothes cling to our thighs and our hair plasters itself against our necks and faces. I feel more alive in this moment than I have felt in a long long time.
8:55- we get home as the lightning stops and the rain lessens, panting a little and we eat dinner and sit around and talk. ITs the best mood I've been in in a while.
