Last night I went to the troc to see the gypsy punk circus crew from NYC known as Gogol Bordello.
I have heard their music through random mp3s I have on my computer but nothing I think could have prepared me for this...
The first band was this group called Skampida. They were a bunch of columbians who immegrated to Miami florida and came across this sound of blending ska and a twinge of reggea and punk. They were quite entertaining. Very politically driven from what I hear. But their english wasn't great and they sang in espanol. It almost seems like they took a page out of older Catch 22.
The next band was bland and boring... this band Zox, the only thing they had going for them was the violinist, but for violinist standards he was sub par at best. Their lyrics were horrible also.
But the wait for Gogol Bordello was well worth it. They played a fantastic set with nonstop action and lots of dancing!
Their sound is like a cultural clash... they have eastern european folk music with the accordian and the violin clashing with dancy drum beats and punk rock guitar parts.
The spectacle was quite an amazing site. I wish I had a camera to take actual pics of my experience... but I am stealing others!
Gogol Bordello is a bunch of immegrants from I believe Bulgaria and the came here to rock. If you ever get a chance to see them I recomend it... for all you New Yorkers they play the Roxy tonight.
So start wearing Purple!
