I've decided to change my name from 'belikethemoon' to Start_Today. belikethemoon was based upon this Henry Rollins passage which I really think you should read, it might make you a better person:
The moon will never lie to anyone. Be like the moon. No one hates the moon or wants to kill it. The moon does not take anti-depressants and never gets sent to prison. The moon never shot a guy in the face and ran away. The moon has been around a long time and has never tried to rip anyone off. The moon does not care who you want to touch or what colour you are. The moon treats everyone the same. The moon never tries to get in on the guest list or use your name to impress others. Be like the moon. When others insult and belittle in an attempt to elevate themselves, the moon sits passively and watches, never lowering itself to anything that weak. The moon is beautiful and bright. It needs no makeup to look beautiful. The moon never shoves clouds out of the way so it can be seen. The moon needs not fame nor money to be powerful. The moon never asks you to go to war to defend it. Be like the moon.
I try and live with that mentality and it works for me. I actually have that passage written down and shoved in my wallet for when I think I've been an asshole.
I've changed my username to Start_Today not only because it's one of my favourite songs but from what I've been through the past few years, the loss of friends, beating cancer twice, sick family members etc, I think it's a pretty big acheivement getting through it all. I've tried, and succeeded, in remaining upbeat and positive and used everything as a learning curve for life. What they say is true; what doesn't break you makes you stronger.
After getting the cancer all-clear for the first time it made me appreciate everything in life a whole lot more. I also said to myself that I'd make drastic changes about the way I live in terms of making the most of life. So I went travelling and had a blast. Shortly after I came back I went for a check-up and was told that the cancer had returned. The first time I had cancer I didn't tell a soul until my chemo started (luckily it wasn't intensive) and I battled through the fear, anger and worries by myself. The 2nd time I was told I had cancer I made sure I told people and I'm glad I did. The amount of support I had made it a hell of a lot easier to deal with.
Since getting the all clear for the 2nd time, I've not really set out to acheive my dreams/goals as I intended. But from now on I'm going to try my hardest to make the most of everything and do whatever the fuck I want to do whether people think I'm wasting my time or money or not. So yeah, I've basically had a burst of motivation; hence the name.
If anyone is suffering from/has suffered from cancer, or knows someone who is and wants some mutual advice or support then I'll glady be at the other end of the phone (when I get back to my phone!) or keyboard.
It's Wednesday and I;m in London at the moment. Hopefully be back in Bristol soon.
