I got into a debate with some family members over religion recently... namely Revelations and the whole DaVinci Code phenomenon. I mentioned that according to some research I'd done the whole concept of the "Rapture" was a fairly recent concept, having been presented to the population by 19th century evangelists and widely accepted during that time period. My Mother glared at me and stated "It's in the Bible!" As if that puts an end to the discussion. I believe the passage was that Christians will be "caught up in the air" with the returning Christ. Who's to say that they would simply disappear, go "poof" as modern day Christianity seems to accept. Revelation is a book full of metaphor and allegory. For all we know, the rapture could be people taking off flying.
And I am somehow reluctant to take passages referring to the bizarre creatures Revelation describes literally, either. Clearly, though, mine was not a worthwhile opinion, and my family members were perfectly content to unquestioningly accept the dogma they had been spoon-fed, and not have a single thought of their own on the matter. So, I just shut up. If they wanted to base their lives on a book that has been re-written, mistranslated, and edited in certain ways for political reasons, it's their decision to become drones. I guess what pissed me off was that I was censured for having a mind and opinion of my own.

Exactly - it was inspired by God, just as equally as all the 'lost' Gospels were.
