Last Friday I took my Volunteer Paid Day Off from work. It's pretty incredible that my place of business does this. I went with 8 friends to a local state animal shelter. We walked pups for two hours in an effort to get them out of their cages. While I was there they told us the state had roughly 850 dogs in their care. These are just the doggies that pass the non aggression tests. The ones that don't are pretty much instantly euthanized. Even if they do pass, a majority of these loving animals won't be adopted, and will only spend a few weeks in a cage until they are also pushed into the k9 afterlife. While talking to the people that are constant volunteers there I realized that they are absolutely desperate to have more people come down just to walk the dogs, let alone foster or adopt them. My own little lady pup came from exactly the same kind of place. I can't believe that she had to live in these conditions even after she escaped the terrible place she came from before. Please, if you have the relatively minor means, adopt a dog from your local pound. There truly is no more rewarding experience.
