If Saturday is going to be less then monumental I might as well time travel instead
candy cigarettes::
combing the beach for lost change
combined age 15 two kids
brianna and me
she had swallowed lake water so we went to get something to drink
her mom
my aunt
I over heard telling my mom
her aunt
"connie I just hate her swimsuit, all those puney little boys can see right through it"
I didnt get what she meant
I mean , we're kids
so the waves bounce about bouies and the raft we all splashed out to earlier that summer evening
she has this laugh thats bigger then the two of us
following foot steps across mini dunes up the inclined water front
the snack shack had its doors shut to keep the misquitos out
a pack of grape apes, happy taffy, chinese cherry treats, sweet caramel corn, orange drink, lemon shaped heads, dead end
what do you want to drink
scratch of the swim cap she relaxes and fixates on two older girls
their picking up the ashy smashed into the cracks of the sidewalk remains
she calls them by their names
"ashley and megan, are you smoking?"
she must be joking was the expression they both shared
their hair wisked away with their delicate bodies towards the public urinals where the ashtrays properly lay dormant
unattended by the prying eyes of suspecting adults
"heres one , virginia slims oh theres another, marlboro my favorite, hand me the lighter"
pulling my trunks out from my butt I hand the man at counter combined deepness of voice and height in my head he must be 18
a dream i thought, to be 18
candy cigarettes please
brianna and I went to the other side of the shack and opened the pack of un wrapped chalk sticks
coughed a bit for a effect and pantamimed a sparkling crack of flame
savouring the flavour of carcinagin lacking tobacco less candy cigarettes
puff a wiff of powder, and thats all
artifical coloring for a cherry a mute brown for where I guess the filter goes
sand between my toes
tiny stones
brianna had cancer for 8 years of her life
my sister died of the a brain tumor when she was five
she would have been about the same age as the older girls smoking the yucky someones left behinds
although I doubt she would be interested in that sort of thing
Id like to think
brianna and me kept the change
we would walk between the houses in her hilly neighborhood to get to the video store to rent classic kids movies like
puppet master
cant buy me love
back to school
it was cool to hang out with my cousin back then
now I guess I had forgotten how much fun we actually had
I'm glad to see her grow up
I can smile about the things we used to do
play with a giant parachute
hungry hungry hippos, operation, on to super nintendo games
we never talked about camielle
my sister
her cousin
I guess somethings are better left unsaid
