Rats are pretty resilient animals but they do need medical attention asap if they get any sort of infection. New rats will always get a fazing from your existing pets which is why it's important to read up on introducing them correctly, and do it on neutral territory to minimise aggression and potential injury.
Sometimes rats just don't get on and you do have to keep them separate, I had to do it that way for one generation. But don't give up. The rat group is here for you.
