I thought of this exchange of ours when I wandered into BestBuy (ha! It was right there) to look for Vampire Weekend. I found it and decided I deserved at least one more cd and tried to remember my extensive wishlists. Like Abe Simpson I stood, a blank mask having no idea of anything I remotely liked, let alone had been comp shopping for. And so I got nothing.

His early stuff was folkie, but suddenly he went Beatles and was always praised for his likeness to them (like, he was never reguarded as a cheap knockoff, but like a wonderful modern memory).
On the booming Beatles tip, I recommend in this order: XO, then Figure 8, then From A Basement On the Hill (the latter his first posthumous). Then you are welcome to go back to the beginnings at your leisure, but I lately concern myself mainly with the Beatles-freakout-Smith. Eventually tell me what you think of XO because that's one of my "all time" personal loves.
