I played chess this weekend. I don't play chess often and I haven't played chess in several years.
We were fairly evenly matched. In fact, she may have been just a touch better than I was. Take a Piece, Lose a piece ... point for point we were never far off. The game seemed very back and forth without a clear winner. It got to the point that we even tried to distract one another for the upper hand. Didn't work though.
Once the board was cleared of nearly every piece of value - save maybe the king plus 2 (per side) - it looked almost like we'd have to call it a stalemate.
A single pawn, 1 square at a time, timidly walked across the board while other pieces fell around it.
The king was in no real danger. He was protected and had a little room to move .... but there was a force giving the king boundries which he could not cross. The single pawn walked on that boundry line. The king sat next to the pawn ... and he could not take it. If the king were to take the pawn, he would place himself in "check" ...
And that single isolated pawn walked on the boundry - next to the king - and made its way across the entire board. The pawn then turned and faced the king .... it turned into a Queen and said to him "Checkmate."
Am I a pawn? Is she the king? Do the rooks who guard her know that they are preventing her from stopping her own overtaking? Or did she let the pawn pass because she knew ...?
But then - its just a game of chess. Right?

redfirefaery:
perhaps the king saw the pawn as, rather than a threat, a savior...

i am fairly certain you know exactly where my thoughts have been. i am also fairly certain you know that what is holding me up moving along in life is the idea of whether i want a family badly enough to be dissatisfied/unsatisfied for the rest of my life. or do i give up the dream i have had my whole life of having kids and a husband to follow what i know my mind and body are looking for? life changing stuff to decide on the stomach empty because i forget to eat, can't eat, and anything i eat tastes like ash...
