My first quarter teaching has come and gone. I had a rather intense moral debate with myself when it came time to give grades:
1 student didn't do half of the homework but had made recent improvements and a decent final exam score.
A couple of students who tried quite hard, did all of the work but at the end of the quarter couldn't do anything.
my top 3 scores were 95, 82 and 75 percent.
besides these outliers everyone was in the 60-64% range.
WTF?
Asking around I find that in most of the classes average=B/B+. The old A/B/C grading system has been replaced with A/A-/B.
Conclusion:Grades are stupid. The only thing you can figure out from them is whether or not someone is a complete jagoff.
What I want to do is make the bottom 3 take the class again without anything going on their record. Everyone except for the top person should get a pass. And the top person should get a pass+ or something.

Or rather no knowledge of grades, no teachers with guilt complexes. Or fears.
