Just got back from an evening with Kevin Smith. Since I am not going to con this year and he was coming to town I figured I would go. It was ok, there were a lot of funny parts but I think that I am used to the DVDs where they pick the best questions and then con where it is a bunch of serious nerds and fans asking questions so it is better. I mean one of the questions was, "you're from Jersey, what do you think of the Jersey shore?" Anyone that has ever followed him anywhere on the internet or even watched one of the DVDs knows that he hates reality TV and knows that he is more of a sci fi or fantasy TV watcher. He says all the time that if he is going to watch TV he wants to be taken to another place and not see something he can live everyday.
So I think it is just at that point where his semi followers are willing to shell out the money to go see him, and getting the balls to ask him a question, to where it is kinda dulling the whole experience of his Q&As. There were at least 4 questions tonight where he knew they were just retarded questions and just told a random story so that he could keep the show going.
I think I was also dumbfounded by the fact that he had a movie release last week and there wasn't a single question about the movie. I mean his best stories are about shooting his films and the shit that goes on during filming. He had to find ways to talk about the movie and still answer questions. I mean he just did a movie with Bruce Willis and his Live Free and Die Hard film set stories about working with Willis were amazing. He had to stop and tell a story about how Bruce pretty much directed A Couple of Dicks (Cop Out) because every time he tried to make a directorial decision Bruce would step in and tell him that he was doing it wrong and how he wasn't going to argue with John Mcclane about a cop movie with guns.
All in all it was a good night but I had to rant that if you are going to go see him that it might be a little less fan boys only now and a little more general population.
