"Unos, dos, tres, catorce!"
Been a longtime since I was psyched about new music. Really psyched, that is. And even longer since I gave a damn about U2, but I must admit yesterday's surprise gig under the Brooklyn Bridge kicked @ss.
Bono and the boys kicked off the PR machine for the new disc with a set lasting nearly an hour in Brooklyn's Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park, about 20 minutes from where I live.
A friend tipped me off at 2:15pm for a gig that was slated to commence at 2:30. I hesitated at first, but then thought "why the hell not?" The deal was set when I was able to coax my girl to play hooky with me.
We got there 'round 3, snaked our way to the front of the long @ss line and schmoozed a security guard to get through the gate. We had our spot (about 15 feet from the stage) by 3:30. Gig started 'bout an hour later.
Short, but amazing set. The new tunes are stellar - especially the heartfelt "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" and wistful "City of Bright Lights."
Their hook-laden single "Vertigo" ohrwurmmed itself into my head and quickly put in for a change of address. The tune has been bopping 'round in there ever since. Been walking around screaming, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah ... YEAH!!!!" all freaking day.
They even brushed off "I Will Follow" and "Out Of Control" for us old farts. God bless 'em.
Life is pretty damn good right now. I'm enjoying the best mood I've found myself in since the election.
How be you?
