This one’s gonna sound a bit whiny, but, fuck it, this shit’s gotta come out, and I can’t afford a good therapist right now.
For many years, I’ve been an outsider looking in when it comes to our society, thanks in no small part to my mental health disability. I see this vast cluster of civilizations that make up our station on this tiny speck in the cosmos, and I see our… potential. We are clearly capable of great things, which are easily observed in our technological strides and access to various resources and services. We can send people to the moon… but we can’t ensure everyone gets a decent education? We can cure almost any ailment… but we can’t ensure everyone gets cured? We can come together to build vast stretches of skyscrapers and all the amenities… but we can’t house the whole populace? Things don’t add up in this department, or rather, they do, but only when you factor in greed, apathy, and the like.
I grew up watching Star Trek (mostly The Next Generation). That show depicts an ideal version of Earth, at least to me. Lately I’ve been thinking about what it would take to get us there. Given there are always going to be narcissists out there ready to take advantage of the undereducated or just plain foolish in order to get what they want, it doesn’t look good. In fact, I don’t think anything short of a hive mind situation revealing every dirty lie and secret the population has been told and forced to live through is going to cut it, and even then, there would have to be a sharp vigil kept afterwards. In short, I think we’re screwed. I’ve been wondering what the point of sticking around and enduring all this is again. It’s very tempting to walk away from it all. There are things to love, of course, but it’s all tainted. I’m tired of wading through the muck to get to something good. I feel like Artex in “The Never Ending Story”.
