Last week, @missy, @rambo, and @lyxzen asked us a fun question for our weekly blog homework, "what is your ultimate last meal?"
Well, contrary to popular belief, I LOVE eating. I have become a more adventurous eater as I have gotten older and I sometimes wish my stomach was 3 times bigger than it really is.
That being said, my ultimate last meal would be multi-cultural and would have to span over a few courses.
Appetizers:
Things like sauteed mushrooms, braised southern greens, those biscuits with apple butter from Lucille's bbq restaurant, tomatoes stuffed with goat cheese (or most anything stuffed with goat cheese), baked eggplants with mozzarella sprinkled on top. I suppose vegetables would be a nice, light start.
Japanese course:
If you haven't seen my previous posts or seen some of my tattoos, I am deeply attached to Japanese culture and their delicious food is no exception. I've been to the country twice and each time, I can never eat enough.
Nigiri sushi: salmon, tuna, octopus, amberjack, yellowtail, I've never met a piece of raw fish I didn't like.
Fugu sashimi I had on my first trip. My tongue did not go numb sadly from what I recall.
Whale sashimi: really irony but interesting. I did prefer it raw vs the cooked dishes I tried.
Ramen- Thank goodness I live in Southern California because you can get ramen most anywhere but one thing Japan has over us is they serve their eggs soft boiled in their ramen.
Yakitori: typically it's all parts of the chicken bbq'd. Heart is amazing, gizzard, skin, cartilage, even liver isn't bad. They do tiny seasoned meatballs. Sausage is sometimes grilled and vegetables as well. Japanese sweet potato is great as well. It's also just a fun way to eat. Some places are bars without seats, you order a handfull of skewers, and move on to your next destination. Also, a pretty damn cheap way to eat!
Omurice: another glorious Japanese concoction. It's an omelette stuffed with rice, meats, and smothered in sausage. Enough said, it's delicious.
Takoyaki: one of my favorite things in the world! Although it did take me a few tries to really enjoy it. Within the warm, soft pancake batter is a piece of octopus tentacle. They throw all kinds of stuff on top, mayo, teriyaki sauce, bonito (which I strongly dislike), and ginger. I have heard rumors there are a few places in SoCal that serve these delectable bits but I've only ever had them in Japan.
Sweets: the Japanese looooove their sweets. I love traditional mochi, not the stuff you get in the freezer section that is mostly just ice cream. Mochi is really just ice paste that is usually served room temperature or cold, sometimes it is filled with things (red bean is my favorite) topped with sesame seeds.
Bread stuffed with warm red bean. Mmmmm. Plus it's in a fun shape!
Brick toast! Literally a loaf of bread warmed up and served with all kinds of goodness.
Also, I have a deep love of pho with tendon and tripe. And while we're on the Asian train, I would also want Thai red curry and coconut soup. Oh! And these tasty mothers...
Fried freaking bananas. It's so simple but so damn good. I remember the first time I had them, my world was forever changed.
I am also a huge fan of Mexican food so another course of my last meal would require
Chile relleno, or deep fried green bell pepper stuffed with cheese. Bring me your Tex Mex, your burritos, your quesadillas, and your nachos (plus chile cheese fries).
Following the Mexican course would be Brinner, or breakfast for dinner. French toast, eggs benedict, hash browns, potatoes o'brian, Belgian waffles, poached eggs, bacon, bacon, bacon. Any time is a good time for breakfast, especially if it's your last breakfast.
For dessert, French macaroons of all flavors and bread from 85 Cafe and Bakery. It's a Taiwanese bakery here and their breads are so soft and butter, filled with delicious cremes, coconut filling, chocolate. I could eat myself into a diabetic coma and die just from this place alone.
Naturally, I am going to need something to wash all this down with. I love IPAs, anything from Ballast Point (especially their Grapefruit Sculpin) but I would also have Great Lei from Belching Beaver as the flavors are fantastic, any IPA from Bottle Logic brewing, and a spicy Bloody Mary for breakfast!
Oh boy, I am just hungry having had typed all of that. Since I have to go on living, I am going to go break for dinner and eat my salad. What would your last meal be? Would it be as extravagant as the multi-course monster I just wrote about or something simple and home cooked?
