Hi loves,
Firstly I wanted to thank you all for the love on my new set, Magenta. I love this set so much so I’m glad you all do too. A lot of you were surprised I self shot the set, so I thought I would write up a blog post about self shooting!
Shooting this set was no easy task, and so far both of my sets have been self shot! This is mainly due to the fact Australia has been in and out of lockdown, but I didn’t let this stop me from joining SG! Although I have been a photographer for longer than I have been a model, self shooting has taught me a lot so I’d like to share some tips and tricks I have learnt along the way.
Gear doesn’t matter!
A lot of people think that the camera does all the work and I often wish this was true. You don’t need the best gear to shoot great photos and although if you’re wanting high quality images, a DSLR is the best way to go, an iPhone or equivalent holds up really well! I will always say that a tripod is a huge help for self shooting though!
Lighting is your best friend!
Whether it’s natural light or artificial, using light purposefully is so important to good images. If you want bright, light filled images, making sure the light source is directly on you is so important. Light can also be used to make dramatic moods (for example if placed on either side of you) and highlight our favourite bits such as the curve and dip of a cleavage or bottom!
Change up the angles!
The biggest telltale of a self shot set is the camera being static and staying in the same place the whole time. I find that creating dynamic angles that make the images look as if someone else has shot them takes the longest when self shooting. Thinking about what you want the shot to look like before going into it is a huge help and taking the time to change it up consistently makes a huge difference!
Get creative!
Even super simple editing can entirely change a photo set, and correcting lights, darks and colour within your images will take it to the next level. For my SG sets, I like to keep my editing clean and simple but finding out what works best for you is what it’s all about!
Take some time with yourself!
Self shooting can be a stressful experience but it doesn’t have to be. Take some time to check in with yourself and feel out what you are doing. You’re in control of the whole process and find what poses, angles and moods you feel great in. Self shooting can be quite intimate and sexy even!
Those are my top tips for self shooting! If you haven’t seen my new set yet, I would love to hear what you think 💕 If you do any self shooting in the future, I would love to see it too!
