Crazy, Stupid, Love was a really good movie. Last night I only made it through the first half which I had already seen. Today I finished it and was completely surprised by how much better than average it was. There is a crazy twist which I didn't even kind of see coming and it hurt my brain a little bit but it was great. And there was a happy ending, which is something I will always appreciate.
Today at work I finished To Hell And Back by Audie Murphy. A very good book. It was well written and made the whole experience seem very realistic and believable. Often times the soldiers in WWII are painted in a heroic light, filled with bravado and endless courage and whatever else. At times this was true but in reality, the soldiers back then were regular guys. They did questionable things, cracked jokes to overcome fear, cried, screamed, freaked out when they couldn't take it, and occasionally they were able to overcome everything and be larger than life heroes. I have probably read more books about WWII than any other type of book and war in general still doesn't make any sense to me. I can understand the different perspectives behind the whole thing but I still find it incredibly pointless. And reading firsthand accounts of what soldiers actually go through during combat and what they have to deal with afterward, makes it seem all the more pointless. And trying to figure out some sort of understanding for the whole thing is probably why I am fascinated by the subject. I don't really think there is any understanding to be had though. Everyone probably comes up with their own explanations to satisfy their own misgivings, but I don't see how anyone can come up with a reasonable understanding and explanation if they think too long about it.
Tonight we had a family dinner for my mom's dinner and my sister inadvertently invited over husband. They are currently separated and have been for months, and it came out in the beginning of the whole thing that no one in the family really liked him. My sister is still trying to work things out though and they have been in contact off and on. Tonight she apparently jokingly said he could come over and give the dogs a bath as a present for my mom. He took her seriously and showed up in the pitch black backyard during the middle of dinner. I then had to sit across from him and be reminded of how gross it is when he eats. My mom was nice but I just completely ignored his existence. I have never liked him and regardless of the outcome, I never will. I put up with him because he was good to my sister but he has dropped the ball enough there that he could never possibly redeem himself.
After finishing Crazy, Stupid, Love and falling in love with it, I watched Everything Must Go. It is a serious Will Ferrell movie that he pulled off well. Stranger Than Fiction is better but Everything Must Go was still a good display of Ferrell's ability to play serious, with a little bit of funny mixed in. I also saw an episode of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia that I somehow missed. The premise is that they are trying to steal an expensive artifact and the whole episode most of them are trapped in the house they broke into. It was hilarious.
I ended up actually waking up this morning to listen to Jimmy Fallon host American Top 40 Countdown and I'd say it was worth it. He made it entertaining. And I had actually heard of most of the songs. That was surprising. I haven't listened to the Countdown since before Ryan Seacrest took over but apparently it is fashionable to call it the AT40. I also noticed the shortening of names in the radio commercials. At one point Baskin-Robbins was referred to as BR. Really? Do people really say they want to go get ice cream at BR? Anyway, the point for all of this is that I woke up early to listen to the show and now I am freaking tired. So I'm going to rectify that.
