From Pluto to obscure religions:
If there was any religion currently in need of a good P.R. campaign, it's the Zoroastrians. Apparently this 3,000 year old faith (which I had never even heard of before I read the below article) is in major decline:
Zoroastrians Keep the Faith, and Keep Dwindling
"Zoroastrianism predates Christianity and Islam, and many historians say it influenced those faiths and cross-fertilized Judaism as well, with its doctrines of one God, a dualistic universe of good and evil and a final day of judgment."
But apparently, this religion's own tenets are part of its undoing:
"The very tenets of Zoroastrianism could be feeding its demise, many adherents said in interviews. Zoroastrians believe in free will, so in matters of religion they do not believe in compulsion. They do not proselytize. They can pray at home instead of going to a temple. While there are priests, there is no hierarchy to set policy. And their basic doctrine is a universal ethical precept: "good thoughts, good words, good deeds."
It's strange to me, though, how other religions that don't proselytize, like Buddhism and Hinduism, seem to be hanging on well enough, while this one is dying. I wonder why that is? Maybe because those religions still have hierarchies and leaders?
BUT...I know you'd all rather just be staring at tits than having me remind you of religion...sorry!

Personally, I wouldn't prefer tits to intellectualism. But thats just me.
catdad:
that's exactly his problem, too. He did play cribbage solitaire and solitaire at least several times a day when he was home and able to get around. He played less once he started having trouble getting around. His dementia made it impossible to keep him occupied with it early on. There are times he could do those things nowthat he's on meds for it, but he doesn't want to. We've tried to get him interested, but he just isn't. The table he has for the bed isn't very big for cards and he'd probably be dropping them (and have to ring the attendants to get them). Plus, we aren't terribly impressed with the staff there - he's had his hearing aids fall out more than once (one of them got run over and broken by a wheelchair) and they've lost other small items (probably fell to the floor and was thrown out by the cleaning staff). We just don't think things would last there. He's never been interested in things like crosswords or puzzles, though.
