Is happiness something that's "out there" - something outside ourself which we must somehow extract from the world in order to obtain it? Or is it within us, something internal that exists, potentially, in all of us and our only task is to find a way to bring it out?
Everything I read on this subject suggests the latter - that happiness is generated from within ourself. But where does it come from? If I am unhappy now, does that mean that there is still happiness somewhere within me, laying dormant, waiting for something to trigger it's awakening?
Or is happiness simply a biological state, governed by a certain balance of neurotransmitters in the brain?
What makes people happy?

ooni:
Neurotransmitters... don't think about it that way. Do what you need to do to make it easier to be happy, but you're correct; happiness is within all of us, it's a matter of control and decision.
allyn:
Gee, you always did like asking the big questions...
