"Thank you for seeing me again." were the first words out of him this time.
"It was no problem." I reply, wondering if my desperation to see him is bleeding out into my voice. I decide I don't care one way or the other. "Are you ready?"
"I was kind of hoping that you would show me around the place a little first." He looks at the ground and flushes a little. "Sort of give me the grand tour."
Having been a Reader my whole life, I turned out very differently from other girls I knew. Fun is never a large part of a Reader's life; the lonliness and isolation that comes with our power usually keeps things like laughter and enjoyment out of our lives. I can count on one hand the number of times I've laughed out loud and I've giggled about half that many, but when Jason asked to take the "Grand Tour" I break out into a fit like a little school girl.
"What's so funny?"
"Nothing, it's just that no one has ever really wanted to see my apartment before," I pause "you know, except for the bedroom."
At that, he squares his shoulders and straightens his back, oddly reminding me of John Wayne in a cowboy movie. I have to stifle another giggle when I see the serious, cowboy face that Jason is making.
"I'd be honored if you'd show me your apartment." He says
"The honor is mine cowpoke."
We both laught at the joke, even though I'm the only one who gets it, and lead him through the place.
His reactions to my spacious apartement are a joy to behold. He looks like a little kid in a castle, slack jawed and wide eyed. When I show him my study, he runs right up to the floor to ceiling window and presses his hands and face to the glass, looking out on my view of the park like a tourist gazing down from the Empire State Building.
"Do you like it?" I ask.
"I love it. It's the most amazing house I've ever seen. Iv'e been in mansions that were hovels in comparison to this place. How on earth did you find it?"
"I come across a lot of different kinds of people in my line of work. Some of them deal in real estate.
"This particular client gave me an excellent deal on it in exchange for two free sessions." I say as I run my finger along the giant oak desk at the center of the room, another gift from another client.
His child-like expression vanishes at the mention of my work and I'm sad to see it go. Jason's innocence is one of the things that attracts me so strongly to him.
