It was supposed to be a time for celebrating, but instead it turned into mourning. A local man is discovered floating face down in a Jacuzzi at a Mission Beach Hotel after celebrating his 21st birthday. Investigators say it appears to be an accident.
He and three of his friends came here and went to the room and celebrated by drinking some alcohol, says Lt. Karen Tenney.
Tenney says Tuesday morning Michael Mayfield and two of his friends went to the Jacuzzi at the Paradise Point resort. His friends got cold and left Mayfield alone for about 15 minutes. When they returned, they found him floating face down in the Jacuzzi.
There were some scrapes on his face. Unknown if he took a shallow dive, if thats a contributing factor -- if alcohol is a contributing factor. The coroner will be conducting that investigation, says Tenney.
Even though investigators say there was no alcohol found at the pool area, they say Mayfields friends appeared to be intoxicated after they reported finding him.
