It's becoming obvious here in the glorious land of Cascadia that summer is waning and fall is on the rise. Thank god. I really hate the heat. A lot. I sweat at 70 degrees for gods sake. Plus fall is just better. The green comes back and the leaves change. The evenings are scented with the aroma of wood-burning stoves. So wonderful.
It was a pretty good summer, though. Actually beyond good. Possibly one of the best since I was a little dork running around the neighborhood or occupying the library for more hours than those stinky old men who always chill in the periodicals section. You know the ones, they smell like stale food, staler farts, and old spice.
It started off by wrapping up another year of school, which once again is back upon me, followed by securing a damn fine position as quality assurance supervisor for one of the west coasts largest crop processing plants. Yeah, I'm making sure the food you eat doesn't kill you or make you sick. Fear me. It's been a neat job, but sometimes stressful. The plethora of authentic mexican food fed to me by my minions made up for all that. The thai food too. Oh jesus, I love tom yum and gorditas and every other damn thing they make.
I managed to keep up my exercise routine over the summer as well, despite the long hours at work. It was easy, I have no social life. I dropped almost forty pounds since mid-june, making me very, very close to my goal of 100 pounds down. Very close. One good poop close, really. I suffered a lot of plateaus due to some weight training, but I took a two week "gym-cation" and pushed on through with ease. I still have a long way to go as I'm no-where near being slender or fit, but my general health is 180 degrees from what it had been.
So as well and good as all that is it's not really the bestest part. The best part is my change in relationship status after a very, very long time flying solo. Long story short I've been head over heels in love with this little gal for a long time, but never could get the gumption to let her know. I guess I was scared to, I've been burnt pretty badly in the past and more than once. But I got my courage together, slid the stone away from my heart, and said what I needed to say, and had wanted to for a long time, only to find that she had been in love with me for some time as well. Needless to say that made me a pretty happy guy, because she's the most delightful woman I've ever met. Things aren't perfect as there are some complications, but I get the feeling that it's only a matter of time before the hard stuff gets worked out. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Fall is coming. And with it comes brewing. Time to dust off the kettle and scrub the fermentors. Now I need to know what to brew. Suggestions?

Brew something with star anise, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Something that goes good with squash.
